Horticulturist

Fallingwater (Mill Run, PA)

Fallingwater, a property entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and designated as a National Historic Landmark and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as Full-Time Horticulturist who has a leadership role in restoring, maintaining, and documenting the landscape of Fallingwater. As a key component of Fallingwater’s significance, the landscape plays an important role in the site’s heritage value and interpretation, and the Horticulturist is responsible for coordinating and executing all projects related to the landscape as well as implementing an on-going landscape evaluation.

Job Duties

  • Develops the landscape work plan, operating budget and landscaping policies and procedures. Reviews all landscaping related expenses and invoices. Monitors expenses in conjunction with budgetary guidelines
  • Executes approved work plan for all Fallingwater landscaping, including spring installation, summer maintenance, and fall cleanup in coordination with the Maintenance department, landscape interns and volunteers
  • Documents all landscape projects to the standards set forth in the Fallingwater Landscape Implementation Plan. Regularly reviews the Landscape Implementation Plan to develop work plans that meet guidelines.
  • Provides direct supervision of Landscape Assistant(s)
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of project volunteers and interns
  • Physically installs projects and/or oversees installation while monitoring the progress until the Projects are complete
  • Physically maintains the landscape with assistance from Landscape Assistants, volunteers, interns, and the Maintenance Department
  • Manages forest health, all tree pruning and removals with Maintenance staff and outside tree services
  • Attends regular meetings with the Senior Director of Operations and/or Director of Fallingwater to determine work list of horticultural tasks
  • Develops work plans with Preservation and Collections staff to care for Fallingwater’s living collection at the Main House and Guest House, and executes those plans
  • Ensures that project operations are in compliance with Fallingwater and Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) policies
  • Communicates with the interpretive staff to update them regarding the status of the landscape
  • Works collaboratively with the Senior Director of Operations to prepare FW landscape-related vendor RFP’s (requests for proposals), oversees bidding process, and assists with vendor selection and evaluation
  • Obtains needed supplies and equipment in accordance with established purchasing and procurement policies and coordinates scheduled deliveries
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment and materials used for projects
  • Supports the WPC’s cost containment and fundraising needs as applicable
  • Works with WPC scientists on conservation-related issues as needed
  • Represents and promotes the mission of the WPC and Fallingwater with other horticultural organizations, public agencies, community organizations, and the public. Works to educate and engage the community and constituents and to develop and sustain relationships using Fallingwater and its landscape to accomplish this objective
  • Conducts tours for special groups, as needed
  • Provides fresh herbs and produce to the Fallingwater Café as needed
  • Works with WPC scientists on conservation-related issues as needed
  • Assists other administrative staff in organizing and collecting information relating to the landscape for special projects as needed
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as required

Absolute Requirements

  • Flexibility in work schedule, which can include long hours, evenings, and weekends as needed. Must be able to perform daily physical landscape labor and work outdoors for long periods of time in all weather conditions
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Requires stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching. (full range of body motion for extended periods of time.)
  • Physical stamina and the ability to stand for long periods – 6-7 hours per day.
  • Physical stamina for manual labor working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field, or equivalent associate’s degree required
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of landscape preservation in historic environments
  • Demonstrated experience in naturalized landscapes and environmentally sound landscape design, implementation and maintenance. A good working knowledge of the region’s native and invasive species is desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to work collaboratively and successfully with all types of personalities and people internally and externally
  • Ability to complete tasks independently as well as supervise and train crews of staff and/or volunteers for installation and maintenance
  • Ability to perform specialized horticultural tasks
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and the ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously. Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to effectively and consistently coordinate projects
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)

This is a full-time seasonal position with benefits.

Pay

Starting Rate: $23.17 per hour
