Watershed Forestry Sawyer Technician 

Allegheny Regional Office (Ridgway, PA)

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), at our Ridgway location, seeks a highly motivated person as its Watershed Forestry Sawyer Technician to participate in restoration activities, primarily large woody materials restoration, in streams of the Allegheny National Forest. This person will participate in other watershed restoration project types, including but not limited to agricultural best management practices, aquatic organism passage and various biological and habitat surveys.

Job Duties

  • Participates in watershed monitoring and restoration projects in priority watersheds. Works with all watershed staff to organize, promote, install and maintain restoration projects in conjunction with Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s ongoing conservation initiatives.
  • Operates chainsaws and other power equipment to implement thinning, planting, pruning and other watershed forestry objectives.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of power equipment and hand tools.
  • May communicate with private landowners and obtain permission in order to enter private lands. Corresponds with state, federal and private owners regarding notice of intended research, survey procedures and conservation practices.
  • Assists with the preparation of technical documents, including GIS generated maps and figures (restoration plans, sampling plans, partner reports, stream conservation and monitoring plans) as well as supporting documentation for grants.
  • Responsible for data collection and organization, processing of specimens and implementing quality control measures for field data.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of professional workshops and presentations.
  • Attends meetings of WPC constituents as needed.
  • Assists with delivering educational programs to WPC constituents.
  • Reflects organizational spirit, culture and objectives in activities performed on WPC’s behalf. Acts in WPC’s best interest at all times.
  • Carries out programmatic responsibilities in accordance with the Conservancy’s policies, programs and procedures.
  • Supports the Conservancy’s cost containment and fundraising efforts and needs.

Absolute Requirements

  • Requires a candidate capable of spending long hours in the field traversing sometimes challenging terrain while carrying at least 50 pounds of equipment.
  • Must be able to swim.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Must have the ability to work successfully with people at all levels.


Experience operating a chainsaw is required.

  • Bending, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling and crawling
  • Reaching overhead, at and below eye level
  • Swimming and wading in flowing water
  • Climbing up and down stairways and ladders
  • Sitting/standing/walking for periods in excess of two hours, traversing rugged terrain
  • Speaking and hearing in person, on telephone and other remote speech (2-way radio)
  • Seeing with near, far and peripheral visual acuity
  • Evenings and weekend hours


A bachelor’s degree in watershed science, stream ecology, forestry or a related field is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Sawyer certification or training is preferred.

Experience with tree species identification preferred.

Position Duration

This is a seasonal part-time position.


$16–$17 hourly, based on experience
