The Clarion River Story
The Clarion River in northwest Pennsylvania is defined by serpentine curves, steep forested hillsides and dramatic rock outcrops. It winds through some of the most scenic natural landscapes in the state including the Allegheny National Forest, Clear Creek and Cook Forest state parks, and state game lands.
The Clarion River is a conservation underdog story. After surviving nearly two centuries of deforestation and industrial activity, and 50 years after being basically considered “dead,” it was officially lauded for its beauty and recreational value as a National Wild and Scenic River in 1996. Its champion comeback has been recognized with the honor of “Pennsylvania’s 2019 River of the Year” by the Pennsylvania Organization for Waterways and Rivers. The Clarion has won this title, astonishingly, for the fourth time since 1983
