Basking Hill Nature Reserve

Basking Hill Nature Reserve features steep forested slopes, reclaimed mineland, old fields, and approximately 1.4 miles of frontage along the West Branch Susquehanna River.

Background

The preserve may have been part of or near the historic Kittanning Path, used by Indigenous peoples, European colonists, and American emigrants to travel between the Susquehanna River valleys and the region referred to as the Ohio Country.  The western terminus of the path was Kittanning Village, a major 18th Century Lenape (Delaware) settlement located where Kittanning Borough now sits.

About a mile north of the preserve is the village of Cherry Tree, located at the confluence of Cush Cushion Creek and the West Branch Susquehanna River.  The site had been called “Canoe Place” due to it being considered the upper-most canoe portage from the West Branch to the Allegheny drainage.

WPC is interested in the historic use of this land by or significance to Indigenous peoples, and will consider opportunities to respectfully acknowledge this use or significance in the management of the preserve.  We welcome input and will continue to update this page as we learn more.
