Join us for an exploration of the connections between Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, the Kaufmann Family and Frida Kahlo. In 1938, Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann purchased Frida Kahlo’s “Remembrance of An Open Wound” and “My Birth” from Julien Levy Gallery in New York City. The Kaufmanns of Fallingwater became friends of Kahlo and her husband, Diego Rivera; Kahlo visited Fallingwater on at least two occasions and the Kaufmanns spent time in Mexico City with Kahlo and Rivera at their home and studio. Stories of Kahlo and Rivera live on at Fallingwater through interpretation of its collection, which includes pre-Columbian artifacts, Mexican pottery, four sculptures by Mardonio Magaña (a favorite of Kahlo) and two works by Rivera. Interestingly, Fallingwater also lives on at Kahlo’s home, La Casa Azul, where a photograph of Wright’s magnum opus is on permanent display. Justin Gunther, director of Fallingwater and vice president of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and Melanie Groves, manager of exhibitions and registrar at The Frick Pittsburgh, will livestream from Fallingwater and the Frick’s Frida Kahlo exhibition to discuss this fascinating relationship.
