Enjoy free access to streams and rivers across Western PA

 

May 2026  – You can cast your line on some of Western Pennsylvania’s most pristine fishing rivers and streams when you visit many of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s nature preserves. These private lands, open to everyone to enjoy at no charge, offer anglers free public access to high-quality streams where clean water and healthy habitats support thriving fish populations.

In this article, we focus on just a few WPC preserves in Erie County where you can hook steelhead, trout, bass and more! Are you chasing the thrill of landing a hard-fighting fish? Elk Creek, accessible on WPC’s 92-acre Lower Elk Creek Nature Reserve in Erie County, is a must-visit destination for steelhead fishing. The preserve includes extensive wetlands and helps maintain a contiguous forested buffer along Elk Creek, providing important habitat for wildlife.

Lake Pleasant Conservation Area

Lake Pleasant during summerWhether you prefer to cast from shore or drift quietly in a canoe, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Lake Pleasant in Erie County. Accessible from WPC’s 582-acre Lake Pleasant Conservation Area, this 64-acre lake offers excellent opportunities to catch bass, panfish, trout and more.

A unique cold and warm water stratification provides trout with oxygen-rich cold water in the summer. Natural filtration through glacial sediments containing large amounts of limestone helps to maintain water quality.

    West Branch and South Branch French Creek Conservation AreasWest Branch French Creek

    The cool, clear waters of the West Branch and South Branch of French Creek wind through lush forests and quiet farmland of Northwestern Pennsylvania, creating an ideal setting for a relaxing day of fishing.

    To hook bass and muskie, visit WPC’s 1,064-acre West Branch French Creek Conservation Area, which offers six miles of frontage along the creek. Travel to WPC’s 400-acre South Branch French Creek Conservation Area to fish for rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass and more.
